Services

1.

Developmental Edit

Developmental editing can be important in the early stages of your novel—having an experienced eye look at your story and offer tips for improvement. This service includes studying specific sections and brainstorming ideas. I can help you move through an incomplete story toward the finish line. Hourly fee for this service, depending on the difficulty of your text, which allows for maximum flexibility.

2.

Line Edit

Line editing focuses on creativity and readability at the sentence, paragraph, and scene levels, when you want to refine and elevate your prose. It is more aggressive than copy editing.

A line edit typically addresses these issues and more:

  • overused words

  • unclear phrases

  • redundancies, unnecessary words or phrases (sometimes sentences or scenes)

  • tense consistency

  • narrator/point of view consistency (avoiding “head hopping”)

  • awkward sentence structure

  • weak transitions

  • passive verbs and sentences

  • bad dialogue tags, overuse of adverbs, weak dialogue

  • plot inconsistencies

  • issues with beginnings and endings

  • manuscript conformity to the Chicago Manual of Style

My process involves two passes—reading the entire manuscript, then editing, but it can vary with the complexity of your work. I edit all manuscripts in Microsoft Word, using Track Changes and detailed comments. When completed, you, as the author, will have the chance to accept the suggestions you like and reject those you don’t. I will identify weaknesses and offer solutions without overwriting your voice as an author. Often, my suggestions trigger new ideas. I will also cheer when you do something well.

3.

Copy Edit / Proofread

When your final draft is ready, my copy editing process will correct US English errors and inconsistencies using standards set by Merriam-Webster and the Chicago Manual of Style. This process is less aggressive than line editing, focused on technical problems, and is designed to polish grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, and style.

Copy editing addresses these issues and more:

  • repeated words (“they have have”)

  • homophone errors (“there,” “they’re,” and “their”)

  • punctuation

  • extra spaces

  • incorrect word usage (such as “that” versus “which”)

  • inconsistent spelling of words or names (such as “okay,” “ok,” and “OK”)

  • inconsistent style (numbers and the serial comma)

  • run-ons and sentence fragments

  • capitalization

  • hyphenation errors
